Design details

Inspired by Alana’s connection to paddling, Hilo, and community, these designs weave together symbols of strength, resilience, and belonging. The wave motifs draw inspiration from both the ocean and the crescent shape of Hilo Bay, creating a meaningful connection to the place she calls home.

The woven patterns reflect the relationships and connections Alana has cultivated throughout the years, symbolizing her ability to bring people together, support others, and strengthen community. Together, these elements honor a friend, paddler, and mentor whose influence extends far beyond the canoe. Like the repeating patterns themselves, Alana’s guidance, generosity, and steady presence continue to leave a lasting impact on those around her.

Designed by Hāwelelani Camara, a paddler rooted in Hilo, who drew inspiration from Alana’s love of the ocean, her deep ties to place, and her belief that life moves in swells and waves. Through imagery of Hilo Bay, the ocean, and woven connections, these designs reflect Alana's strength, connection to people and to place.
